It’s hard to believe school is back in session, but it doesn’t mean alfresco activities have to end. Create an endless summer for your kids with fun and engaging projects they can do while still soaking up the sun.
1. After school-picnic: Pack snacks, like cut-up veggies and hummus, PB&J sandwiches, or a fruit salad, utensils, wet wipes, sunscreen, and a blanket, and head to the park or your backyard for an afternoon snack break.
2. Go on a scavenger hunt: Hide back-to-school items, like pencils, eraser, and notebooks, around your front or backyard to create excitement for starting a new school year.
3. Do homework: Taking the task outdoors can increase student engagement and ownership of learning and development of social and collaborative skills, according to a study.
4. Take a listening walk: Connect with nature and hit the trails or stroll around your neighborhood while having your kids take in and point out all the sounds they hear.
5. Have a read-aloud: Grab a blanket, a book, and a shady spot on the grass, for a reading session.
6. Chalk it out: Whether drawing, spelling, or math, use chalk to foster creativity and learning.
